MY REFLECTIVE ESSAY ABOUT MAGUINDANAO PEARLS
INTRODUCTION
Maguindanao pearls is written by Isidro L. Retizos. This story is an ancient Filipino myth. It talks about the love of Sinag-tala and Magiting for each other even though Magiting already is engaged to Lakambini but his heart secretly fells for Sinag-tala, Lakambini was so envious of Sinag-tala that she even blamed her for stealing the pearls. In this blog I'm going to talk about the story "Maguindanao pearls" on how is it connected to our culture and history. I will also share my reaction and conclusion at the end.
BODY
When Sinag-tala was two-and-a-half-days-old , her grandma came and placed a fresh lily on one of her hands and a small, pale pearl on the other. Fourteen years has passed the Lakambini called her to make some baskets to weave. Weaving is popular in Philippines and it is a tradition that comes from neolithical people. Women of the pre- Hispanic era, were given importance. Women had rights to inherit property and also had parts in trading and business. They would weave baskets to be used for exchanging in the market.
Sinag-tala maybe prettier than Lakambini but because of the pearls that Lakambini wore she became more prettier and attractive than Sinag-tala. Pearls were gifts to Chinese royalty as early as 2300 BC, while in ancient Rome, pearl jewellery was considered the ultimate status symbol. The Philippines has a long history of producing natural pearls and shells. The Badjao are famed for their diving abilities and their pursuit of rare natural pearls. Cultured pearl farming is significant right now. The Philippines is well-known for producing brilliant South Sea pearls.
